Being Gay, Becoming Strong

Jim Burroway

April 1st, 2007

I didn’t come out until sometime around my fortieth birthday. So I must admit a certain amount of envy when I read stories like this one from today’s New York Times. Zach O’Connor knew early on that he was gay, even before he knew there was a word for it. He also knew that his […]

An Example of Distorted Science from the Pro-Gay Viewpoint

Jim Burroway

March 25th, 2007

Anti-gay activists aren’t the only ones doing this. Randy Thomas Still Doesn’t Understand Hate Crimes

Jim Burroway

March 13th, 2007

Slow learners, that bunch. Exodus Vice President Randy Thomas is at it again, spreading his total misunderstanding about how hate crimes legislation works. Well, near total anyway. He now acknowledges that hate crimes laws cannot infringe on speech in America, but he’s still worried about some sort of slippery slope effect. But hisfirst two paragraphs are whoppers in cluelessness.

Origins of Heterosexuality

Paul Varnell

March 8th, 2007

By Paul Varnell. I’ve been wondering what makes people heterosexual. I’ve read what I can find of the research on the origins of heterosexuality — there isn’t much — and no one seems to have any clear idea…

Alan Chambers Comments on Ann Coulter

Jim Burroway

March 7th, 2007

It seems that everyone, liberal and conservative, has something to day about Ann Coulter’s recent anti-gay slur she uttered to an overflow crowd at a Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC). As I continue to talk about my observations from last month’s Love Won Out conference, I noticed that Alan Chambers, president of Exodus International, wrote this on his blog…

Part 3: “Love Won Out”: A Whole New Dialect

Jim Burroway

March 6th, 2007

For me, attending the Love Won Out ex-gay conference in Phoenix was very much like being an anthropologist from Mars, as Oliver Saks once put it. I observed a culture with its own vaguely familiar language and customs. And learning its language was key to understanding the framework and worldview from which Love Won Out operated. But as is true with many cultures, it almost requires a total immersion inside the culture of Love Won Out to pick up on the nuances of those terms and customs.

A History Lesson for Exodus Vice President Randy Thomas

Jim Burroway

February 26th, 2007

Randy Thomas, who has recently been promoted to Vice President of Exodus International, provided a rather illogical reason for discounting the quest for equal rights for gays and lesbians as having anything to do with civil rights. His complaint? Apparently some among us are too rich and the rest of us haven’t suffered enough.

Slouching Towards Kampala: Uganda’s Deadly Embrace of Hate

Paul Cameron’s World

In 2005, the Southern Poverty Law Center wrote that “[Paul] Cameron’s ‘science’ echoes Nazi Germany.” What the SPLC didn”t know was Cameron doesn’t just “echo” Nazi Germany. He quoted extensively from one of the Final Solution’s architects. This puts his fascination with quarantines, mandatory tattoos, and extermination being a “plausible idea” in a whole new and deeply disturbing light.
