Students March for Lawrence King

Jim Burroway

February 17th, 2008

Last Friday, we reported on a memorial march for Lawrence King, the 15-year-old student who was shot and killed by a classmate because he was gay. There was another march Saturday, this time organized by Oxnard, California students. They had expected only a few hundred to show up. But much to the surprise of organizers, school officials and police, more than a thousand turned out to remember Larry.

This response moved me so much. How they made something beautiful from something so utterly horrible and unnecessarily tragic. The crowd was quite diverse from what I could see. I’m so proud of the turn out and the comments from the youngest of the participants. I have been called all kinds of names or treated as if I have been brainwashed by gay people.
For example: homosexualist…what the hell is that?

Anyway, the people who came out to show their love are REALLY showing the kind of love John Smid and so on wouldn’t have the courage to.
They like to think a boy who wore nail polish to school is more dangerous than the one who would bring a gun to school and shoot another child in the face.
I haven’t heard from any of the anti gay over this shooting, have you?

It is encouraging that, despite the fact that many adults struggle with their own bigoted and homophobic ideas, this multitude of teens can stand up for what’s right!
