In the above clip from NTV Uganda, President Yoweri Museveni’s press secretary Tamale Mirundi responds to US President Barack Obama’s statement blasting Museveni for agreeing to sign the Anti-Homosexuality Bill. Mirundi tells reporters that Museveni “cannot be intimidated.” On the question of foreign aid, Mirundi said, “we can do without that aid.”

Awesome. We can use that money for something else then…like paying our debts.

Note, two wives. Meaning some Ugandan man is therefore without a wife (thank heavens that particular guy happens to be gay, and is therefore not angry about powerful people monopolising the lady folk).

Can do without aid… well, OK, if you say so. No sooner said than done.

(personally, the first message should be to deny visas for any pupose to all such people rather than cut aid. Make it personal, to them.)

Grantdale– google “Christian polygamy in Africa”. It’s quite an eye-opener.

February 19th, 2014 | LINK

Grantdale, yes, commenters on African news sites bring up polygamy surprisingly often, saying that African countries have just as much right to ban same-sex marriages as Western countries have a right to ban polygamy. The comments are usually highly patriarchal; they never mention lesbians at all.

So, I make a point of saying polygamy means some men will never be able to marry a woman, but same-sex marriage gives those poor (literally) desperate heterosexual men a break since every same-sex marriage takes two men out of the competition for brides.

It’s embarassing to make that type of sexist argument. Nobody else does. But I suspect this argument may be one of the few ways to get through to homophobic men, especially those that bring up the issue of polygamy.
