Marco Rubio Announced As Featured Speaker At Anti-Gay Event In Orlando

Marco RubioLiberty Counsel Action, the political action arm of the Liberty Counsel, and the Florida Renewal Project, an affiliate of the American Renewal Project, have announced that Sen. Marco Rubio will be speaking at its “Rediscovering God In America Renewal Project“on August 11 and 12 in Orlando. The conference will take place exactly two months after the Pulse gay night club massacre in which 49 people were killed and 53 injured. According to Right Wing Watch, Rubio will be speaking alongside anti-gay extremists like Mat Staver, David Barton, Bill Federer, David Lane, and Maine pastor Ken Graves.

Last week, Rubio was confronted by angry protesters when he made a media appearance just a short walk down the street from the now-shuttered Pulse night club. Protesters were angered by Rubio’s statement in which he said he was “honored to receive John Stemberger’s endorsement.” John Stemberger is Florida’s leading and best-known anti-LGBT activist as head of Florida Family Action. Rubio will now be sharing the platform with some of the country’s more extremist anti-gay activists. Here’s a brief refresher:

  • Mat Staver: He is head of the Liberty Counsel and Liberty Counsel Action. Liberty Counsel defended Kentucky clerk Kim Davis’s refusal to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples. When Staver was dean of Liberty University’s law school, he taught his law students that they should counsel their clients to break the law in favor of “God’s Law.” And according to a RICO lawsuit connecting his law school to the Miller-Jenkins kidnapping case, his law school apparently practices what he taught. Last month, he denounced Orlando area churches for participating in “homosexual love feasts” by offering prayer services and open channels of prayer, and dialogue with the grieving community.
  • David Barton: He is a Texas-based fake historian who has said that God was preventing the medical profession from finding a cure for AIDS because it was “the penalty due them.” He has also repeated the false claim that gay people die decades earlier than straight people. In 2011 when Democrats still held the majority in the Senate, Baron claimed that prayers from the Senate side of the U.S. Capital can’t get through to God because “they get delayed twenty-one days because the principalities are up there fighting in the Heavenlies.”
  • David Lane: I haven’t been following him, except for this post where he organized a trip to Israel for sixty Republican Party leaders which was paid for by the American Family Association. Right Wing Watch has this rundown, which included his 2013 statement that we would see “car bombs in Los Angeles, Washington D.C. and Des Moines, Iowa,” because of “homosexuals praying at the Inauguration.”

Which is what makes the mainstream media allowing him to get away with his photo op stunt during the Orlando massacre all the more frustrating. Few even challenge his being there alongside Rick Scott.

I mean, at least Scott obstructs according to his party’s guidelines but doesn’t go out of his way to air in public his anti-gay leaning.

Rubio flaunted them among an audience of Florida International University students.

Rubio’s about as establishment Republican as they come. He toes the party line to a T, so I’m really surprised he did so poorly in the primaries without the party’s support.

Hell, the party’s been drooling at the prospect of some token Latino to be Julian Castro’s foil (and ironically, both Julian Castro and Marco Rubio are not good Spanish speakers, where Rubio butchers it and Castro….well the ears do better when he sticks to English) for the Republicans.

Rick Scott and Pam Bondi hide behind “legal duty” for their anti-gay obstructionism, but Rubio does the maddening soundbite of “Just because we disagree on marriage doesn’t make me homophobic.”

Good for Marco Rubio for being willing to take a stand against gay rights.

Perhaps given the story above this one, the event needs to be “zapped”. Rubio deserves loathing (far more than any Clinton, Mr. Burroway), and should be held to task for his pretense of caring about the community after the Pulse Massacre, and then following it up with this.

We must stay on top of Marco Rubio and this issue, and not let any news piece go unaddressed. Marco cannot disrespect us, and then USE us, and with insincerity to boot.

Marco cannot even show up for a Senate vote. He does not have the personal integrity to take a stand on an issue and stick with it.

Eight years in the Arkansas Governor’s Mansion, eight years in the White House, Hillary Clinton NEVER LIFTED A FINGER OR RAISED HER VOICE to repeal sodomy laws in either Arkansas or the rest of the country. Our enemies aren’t just the ones who bash us. They are also the ones who stand by and do nothing while others bash us.

When will queers grow up?

“The brief …could have been written by the Rev. Pat Robertson,” wrote former Clinton adviser David Mixner, now a prominent Democratic fundraiser. “Using the worst of stereotypes, it intimates that we don’t have constitutional guarantees, invokes scenarios of incest, of children and advocates that we don’t have the same rights as others who have struggled for civil rights. ”

In this original BTB Investigation, we unveil the tragic story of Kirk Murphy, a four-year-old boy who was treated for “cross-gender disturbance” in 1970 by a young grad student by the name of George Rekers. Slouching Towards Kampala: Uganda’s Deadly Embrace of Hate

When we first reported on three American anti-gay activists traveling to Kampala for a three-day conference, we had no idea that it would be the first report of a long string of events leading to a proposal to institute the death penalty for LGBT people. But that is exactly what happened. In this report, we review our collection of more than 500 posts to tell the story of one nation’s embrace of hatred toward gay people. This report will be updated continuously as events continue to unfold. Check here for the latest updates.

Paul Cameron’s World

In 2005, the Southern Poverty Law Center wrote that “[Paul] Cameron’s ‘science’ echoes Nazi Germany.” What the SPLC didn”t know was Cameron doesn’t just “echo” Nazi Germany. He quoted extensively from one of the Final Solution’s architects. This puts his fascination with quarantines, mandatory tattoos, and extermination being a “plausible idea” in a whole new and deeply disturbing light.

On February 10, I attended an all-day “Love Won Out” ex-gay conference in Phoenix, put on by Focus on the Family and Exodus International. In this series of reports, I talk about what I learned there: the people who go to these conferences, the things that they hear, and what this all means for them, their families and for the rest of us.

Anti-gay activists often charge that gay men and women pose a threat to children. In this report, we explore the supposed connection between homosexuality and child sexual abuse, the conclusions reached by the most knowledgeable professionals in the field, and how anti-gay activists continue to ignore their findings.
