Gay rights advocates have long pushed the argument that homosexuality is inborn, either through genes, prenatal hormones, or other biological mechanisms. There’s the assumption that if homosexuality is inborn, then it is proof that people can’t change. It is also understood that when someone believes that homosexuality is inborn, then that person is more likely […]

Those of us in the reality-based community can point out the American Family Association’s lies about the hate crimes bill till we’re blue in the face but a new ally has joined the fray. Snopes.com, the site dedicated to busting rumors, scams and chain-emails that circulate on the internet has taken the AFA to task. […]

Alan Chambers appeared ever so briefly today on CNN’s The Situation Room with Wolf Blitzer. The discussion was concerning whether homosexuality was inborn and whether gays can change. Chambers’s appearance was exceptionally brief, and several observers are now trying to read the tea leaves based on two very terse snippets. One of those snippets dealt […]

New York Magazine has article which discusses many of the physical differences that are observable between straight and gay people. While most of this was familiar territory, there was one thing new: Richard Lippa, a psychologist from California State University at Fullerton, is one of the leading cataloguers of the many ways in which gay […]

Keep saying it over and over and maybe you’ll believe it. From Wayne Besen: Pretty amazing. A personal favorite from Alan Chambers: “There’s almost a century of experience in ministering to sexually broken people.” Let’s see, Exodus claims to have 130 member ministries. Conservatively, that’s at least 150 people. Divided by a hundred years, that’s […]

When the US House took up the “Matthew Shepard Local Law Enforcement Hate Crimes Prevention Act of 2007,” we saw a lot of blatant dishonesty from far-right opponents. We saw them completely make up bogus hate crime statistics out of thin air. We saw them falsely claim that the legislation would “punish some crimes more […]

State Senator Gale D. Candaras was among the sixty-two Massachusetts legislators who voted for the proposed constitutional amendment to ban gay marriage last January. She was also among eleven lawmakers who switched their vote this time to defeat the measure on its second reading. Her poignant statement explaining her change of heart is worth reading. […]

On May 12th, 20-year old Roberto “Poncho” Duncanson was walking down the street in Brooklyn when he passed 17-year old Omar Willick. Perhaps Roberto smiled… we don’t know. What we do know is that Willick began a stream of slurs against Poncho and that Poncho walked away. Willick followed Duncanson, waited outside while Duncanson visited his […]

The Arkansas Family Council, the group responsible for Arkansas’ constitutional amendment banning gay marriage, has announced that they will push for a ballot measure to ban adoption and foster parenting by gay people or unmarried couples. Sunday, it was Colin Powell calling for an end to “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.” Today, the Wall Street Journal features an op-ed by rabidly anti-gay former Georgia congressman Bob Barr, the author of the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), saying “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” should go: (Sorry, no link; it’s not online): Attitudes both within […]

This past Sunday, Colin Powell, former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, had some comments about the military’s anti-gay “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy put in place during his term of service. MR. RUSSERT: The only two countries from the original NATO group that do not allow openly gay people to serve in the […]

President Bush’s nomination of Dr. James Holsinger to be the next Surgeon General continues to raise concerns among several leading gay rights advocates. Alarms first went up when we learned that Holsinger co-founded a church which sponsors an ex-gay ministry. That discovery reinforced other well-known facts about his tenure on the United Methodist Judicial Council, […]

We all remember back to just a few days after 9/11 when Jerry Falwell and Pat Robertson blamed the terrorists’ actions on homosexuals, among others. According to Falwell, God lifted his veil of protection of America because we embraced all sorts of moral evil. Falwell stood by those remarks just a week before he died. […]

Anti-gay extremist Stacy Harp approves of the Israeli parliament’s recent vote, passing a first reading of measures prohibiting gay pride parades in Jesrusalem and “banning mass homosexual public events anywhere in Israel.” Harp adds, “May the USA follow in Israel’s footsteps.” Unfortunately for her, that would violate the very first provision of America’s Bill of Rights […]

In this original BTB Investigation, we unveil the tragic story of Kirk Murphy, a four-year-old boy who was treated for “cross-gender disturbance” in 1970 by a young grad student by the name of George Rekers. This story is a stark reminder that there are severe and damaging consequences when therapists try to ensure that boys will be boys.
When we first reported on three American anti-gay activists traveling to Kampala for a three-day conference, we had no idea that it would be the first report of a long string of events leading to a proposal to institute the death penalty for LGBT people. But that is exactly what happened. In this report, we review our collection of more than 500 posts to tell the story of one nation’s embrace of hatred toward gay people. This report will be updated continuously as events continue to unfold. Check here for the latest updates.
In 2005, the Southern Poverty Law Center wrote that “[Paul] Cameron’s ‘science’ echoes Nazi Germany.” What the SPLC didn”t know was Cameron doesn’t just “echo” Nazi Germany. He quoted extensively from one of the Final Solution’s architects. This puts his fascination with quarantines, mandatory tattoos, and extermination being a “plausible idea” in a whole new and deeply disturbing light.
On February 10, I attended an all-day “Love Won Out” ex-gay conference in Phoenix, put on by Focus on the Family and Exodus International. In this series of reports, I talk about what I learned there: the people who go to these conferences, the things that they hear, and what this all means for them, their families and for the rest of us.

Anti-gay activists often cite the “Dutch Study” to claim that gay unions last only about 1½ years and that the these men have an average of eight additional partners per year outside of their steady relationship. Tony Perkins’ Family Research Council submitted an Amicus Brief to the Maryland Court of Appeals as that court prepared to consider the issue of gay marriage. We examine just one small section of that brief to reveal the junk science and fraudulent claims of the Family “Research” Council.
The FBI’s annual Hate Crime Statistics aren’t as complete as they ought to be, and their report for 2004 was no exception. In fact, their most recent report has quite a few glaring holes. Holes big enough for Daniel Fetty to fall through.
