Civil unions bill clears Colorado Senate despite theocratic opposition

Daniel Gonzales

April 27th, 2012

Thursday SB-2 (civil unions) passed out of the Colorado Senate with a vote of 20-12 with 3 Republicans joining Dems in support.

In last year’s campaign video I shot of a grandmother who provided graphic testimony about the human anus came to represent the bill’s opposition.

This year two particularly religious Republican Senators have provided some amusing debate.  Here’s a clip of highlights I assembled from today’s floor debate.

The bill now moves on to the House, which is controlled by Republicans by a single vote.  Although openly gay sponsor Mark Ferrendino has enough votes in the House to pass the bill, it’s generally believed the House Judiciary Committee where the bill died last year will again be the largest challenge.

This video is sickening.

Perhaps one of these bigots can explain what civil unions have to do with religion; and perhaps one of these bigots can explain why they think the United States is a Christian theocracy.

Why do these kind of people so often seem to have an obesession with the human anus?? I for one just don’t want to hear that kind of talk.

More to the point, they need a better argument than religion, because I’m not religious and a lot of other people that I know aren’t either.

I’m pretty sure I was over thinking the way these people do by the time I was in the sixth grade, seriously, I might not have been able to articulate such, but I’d had a tendency to make arbitrary judgements based on religion literally beaten out of me by then and the first time I ever called someone a bigoted name, I got my mouth washed out with soap.

I guess a lot of people just weren’t taught right, or didn’t have family that kept on them until they learned it.

I’m not a Christian, so I don’t submit to any of the laws these men hold so dear (aside from those that match civil law, of course).

What disheartens me is the knowledge that this kind of video does absolutely nothing to damage their re-election prospects, because, chances are, their constituents lap this stuff up.
