The Uganda anti-gay conference continues for a second day, with no further explanation on conference leaders’ endorsement of a parliamentarian proposal to upgrade Uganda’s anti-homosexuality law to include forced “therapy” on those who are convicted. Ugandan law already provides for a life sentence on conviction. Exodus board member Don Schmierer has been a highly visible […]

I don’t know if the folks running California’s No on 8 campaign saw this letter. They should have. It’s been on the Internet since July 29, 2008: As the Democratic nominee for President, I am proud to join with and support the LGBT community in an effort to set our nation on a course that […]

California’s Proposition 8 has become an event greater than itself. No longer a vote on whether same-sex couples can call their relationship “marriage”, Prop 8 has become a symbol, a rallying cry, an event that transcends its happening. Protests over its passage have not been limited to the state’s borders, or even the nation’s. A […]

The very same Ugandan online portal which broke the story about the three American anti-gay activists speaking at an anti-gay conference in Kampala has an update featuring comments by American psychologist Warren Throckmorton. The Uganda Pulse web site originally broke the story on February 22, in an article which was little more than a press release by […]

This is the final post in a five-part a series about anti-gay arguments that get the short shrift in public debate. We examine them here. My partner and I enjoy taking weekend road trips. Last winter we took a long cross-country trip from Arizona to Ohio, while taking an out of the way drive through Mississippi. Unfortunately, we missed Natchez. I’m sorry we did, now that I’ve seen this article from the Natchez Democrat: Thom Miller and Shawyn Mars have […]

Hello, Exodus? Someone in Uganda has some questions for you. And so do I. An anonymous Ugandan gay blogger — gay bloggers are well advised to remain anonymous in Uganda — provides a fairly comprehensive backdrop against which three American anti-gay activists will be stepping. Nazi revisionist and Watchmen On the Walls co-founder Scott Lively, […]

There must have been two different parties on Saturday in Salt Lake City, both of them sharing the name “Buttars-Palooza.” How else would one explain the two very different estimates of crowd size. First, the Salt Lake Tribune: More than a thousand people converged on the Utah Capitol on Saturday, not for legislative protest, but […]

He joined sit-in protests at restaurants in Washington, D.C. that refused to serve African-Americans, and he volunteered to register black voters in rural Mississippi. He was run out of Ruleville, Mississippi at gunpoint by a man who was the town’s mayor and justice of the peace. Charles Cobb, Jr. knows what civil rights are all […]

Richard Cohen is back and he’s on tour, with the full blessing of Exodus International member organization PFOX. In this original BTB Investigation, we unveil the tragic story of Kirk Murphy, a four-year-old boy who was treated for “cross-gender disturbance” in 1970 by a young grad student by the name of George Rekers. This story is a stark reminder that there are severe and damaging consequences when therapists try to ensure that boys will be boys.
When we first reported on three American anti-gay activists traveling to Kampala for a three-day conference, we had no idea that it would be the first report of a long string of events leading to a proposal to institute the death penalty for LGBT people. But that is exactly what happened. In this report, we review our collection of more than 500 posts to tell the story of one nation’s embrace of hatred toward gay people. This report will be updated continuously as events continue to unfold. Check here for the latest updates.
In 2005, the Southern Poverty Law Center wrote that “[Paul] Cameron’s ‘science’ echoes Nazi Germany.” What the SPLC didn”t know was Cameron doesn’t just “echo” Nazi Germany. He quoted extensively from one of the Final Solution’s architects. This puts his fascination with quarantines, mandatory tattoos, and extermination being a “plausible idea” in a whole new and deeply disturbing light.
On February 10, I attended an all-day “Love Won Out” ex-gay conference in Phoenix, put on by Focus on the Family and Exodus International. In this series of reports, I talk about what I learned there: the people who go to these conferences, the things that they hear, and what this all means for them, their families and for the rest of us.
